Dongzhou waterworks, which began construction  in September 1998 was completed on May 25th of the same year. It is situated in the Eastern Development District of Zhengzhou and is opposite the Eastern Technology Development District. The whole project runs from the bottomland of the Yellow River in the north to the third southern ring road in the south. Its pipeline is more than 70 kilometers long and covers 410 units of area.
  Dongzhou waterworks is the province¡¯s key project of the Ninth Five Year Plan. It is a large and medium sized water supply program, which was funded by a Japanese loan and the National Coordinated Fund. The main equipment utilized has been purchased from Germany, America and Holland. All the equipment is automatically controlled. Our waterworks can supply 200,000 cubic meters of water per day and is mainly responsible for the water supply of the Eastern Development District and the southeastern part of the city. Because the source water is provided from the underground water of the Yellow River¡¯s bottomland, the water quality is good and it has also become the source of immediate drinking water for the Eastern New District.
Dongzhou waterworks possesses first-class equipment, advanced technology and an excellent staff who always follows highly responsible and scientifically based standards. It also employs a large group of young staff with: up-to-date professional knowledge, an ability to be innovative and are willing to exploit many ways to solve problems or seek solutions. Nowadays, there are 234 people employed at the waterworks and 49 of them have junior college academic credentials or even higher.
About a quarter of our personnel have accepted the title of middle or high technology post, and 66 of the staff is under 35 years old. These young experts have become the enterprise¡¯s technological backbone.
There are five major management mechanisms. They are the water supply department, administration department, source water department, financial department, the comprehensive repair department and the office.
The source water area is distributed in the interior and exterior of the Yellow River bottomland. The exploitation is mainly aimed at shallow water. There are 73 water intake wells of which 32 are A wells, 21 are B wells and 20 are C wells. Each A well is 80 meters deep and its output of water per hour is 140-180 cubic meters. The B wells are 80 meters deep and export 120-160 cubic meters of water per hour. Each C well is 300 meters deep and exports 70-80 cubic meters per hour. The pump houses of the water intake well adopt an underground type in the Western District. But the ones in the Eastern District use an over-ground type that uses high voltage to transmit and distribute power. The transformer is built on stilts designed to concentrate power at the control center for long distance, for remote measure and control, and functions to collect digital information as well as for control and communication.

Everyday the quality of water undergoes rigorous chemical examination according to the city¡¯s water standards: first of all Dongzhou waterworks has a careful examination of the pre-filtered water then of the filtered water and finally of the final output water. We also take water samples from each of the water sources twice a month to carry out a comprehensive chemical examination and make an analysis of the filter tank and the filter material. At the same time, the water purifying workers clean the aeration tank twice a month to improve the quality of the pre-filtered water; as well we also take measures to reduce the amount of sand and minerals to increase the purity of the water. Because of the many measures we take, we can be sure that the samples of the final processed water that we send to the relevant department in Beijing for examination is of the highest possible quality.
 At the end of 2002, the water samples sent to Beijing for examination had reached the hygienic standard of drinking water. This water also conformed to Europe¡¯s standard for drinking water quality. The level of strontium in underground water has also met the standard for mineral spring water. Therefore, we have on the whole met the standard of fresh drinking water.
